Procuring and pressing leaves

The best time to select leaves for printing is in the late spring. Later in the year, leaves become dry, their veins become more pronounced, and some leaves succumb to bumpy growths and damage from insects.

Sources for leaves other than your yard or garden are the produce section of your grocery store or a floral shop. If you press and print seaweed from an aquarium supply store, please let me know how your prints turn out!

You may press leaves in a phone book or other absorbent, flat environment to store leaves and reduce their third dimension (depth).

If pressed leaves are difficult to print because they’re brittle from being pressed or stored, insert the leaf between two pieces of dampened newspaper for about five minutes to “revitalize” the leaf. Wipe water from the leaf’s surface before printing.
